Abstract:

SUMMARY Giardia is a protozoan parasite which exists in the small intestine in man. This parasite could act as a barrier against fat absorption. It also results in anemia as a result of interference with folic acid vitamin B6 and probably iron absorption. In this study a total of 198 infested and 35 noninfested school children were studied for serum Iron and TIBC. The results showed the Iron level to be lower than normal. In 3 patients the TIBC level was higher than normal. In 13 cases the percentage of Iron storage was under fifteen percent of the normal level. The morphology of red blood cell in all blood samples were noromochrom and noromocytic. The levels of Iron and TIBC in the control group were normal.

Serum iron, zinc and copper levels and lipid peroxidation in children with chronic giardiasis.

This study investigated the levels of iron, zinc, and copper and their demolishing effects against lipid peroxidation in chronic giardiasis. Serum iron, zinc and copper levels, erythrocyte cytosolic superoxide dismutase activity, and malondialdehyde levels were measured in 34 children with chronic giardiasis and were compared with controls. The serum iron and zinc levels and erythrocyte superox...

Giardiasis in Children

Opinions are divided regarding the pathological manifestations of the flagellates. Alvarez, Silverton and Bernardino are of opinion that the fact that the infection as well as the symptom disappeared after treatment with atebrin proved beyond doubt the pathogenicity of the flagellates. Chopra et al. (1939) from a routine study of the stools of the patients, the symptoms and the response to trea...

Serum immunoglobulin levels in giardiasis.

Giardiasis is a common disease of the small intestine of man caused by the flagellated protozoan parasite. The influence of host immunity on infection and on modulating its clinical course remains uncertain. Infection in some hosts may be short lived and spontaneously self-limited, while in others it may result in prolonged debilitating illness. Though specific antibody msponse occurs in the ho...

Total iron-binding capacity calculated from serum transferrin concentration or serum iron concentration and unsaturated iron-binding capacity.

in borderline cases. The routine use of other biomar-ker assays, such as HFABP in conjunction with tGST activity, could provide complementary information on the potential allograft " viability ". This is illustrated by the fact that there was better segregation of donor categories (controlled vs uncontrolled) with HFABP than with tGST activity. This finding therefore warrants continued evaluati...

The Serum Levels of Zinc in School Children: a Crosstalk with Stunting and Giardiasis

Zinc deficiency is an increasing public health problem. It may be related to compromised neurobehavioral function in children and adolescents. An association between giardiasis and zinc levels in human hosts had been reported. The occurrence of recurrent intestinal infection by Giardia lamblia may reflect a failure to correct an undefined specific nutrient deficiency, for example, the need for ...

Association between serum ferritin and liver iron concentration with cardiac iron in pediatric thalassemia major patients

Background Recently, the ability of LIC (liver iron concentration) and serum ferritin in predicting myocardial iron overload (MIO) has been challenged by magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) monitoring which demonstrated no or weak correlation between serum ferritin or LIC and MIO. Anyway, the role of this traditional markers could result particularly useful in pediatric population, where MRI asses...
